Chapter Five

Noah flipped through the on-demand movie options, looking for a comedy. Or an action movie. Just not a romance. The last thing he needed was to remind Mollie he was in love with her. She’d made it perfectly clear that she wasn’t ready to settle down or make a commitment. She had a career to build, and he knew more than most the amount of time and dedication that took. It wasn’t that many years ago that he’d been her place, just starting out. He’d had to focus 100 percent on his art to get that first big sale, and then he’d spent the next several years scrambling to keep the momentum going. Work-life balance wasn’t something he’d had time to worry about, so how could he blame her for not wanting to take it on?

He couldn’t.

She’d been right to shut him down. They were in two different places, going different directions. Which meant, if he really loved her, he’d let her go.

They had tonight and tomorrow, and then he’d be headed back to Atlanta and regular life, one without Mollie. The thought was like a physical pain, but there was nothing to be done about it, other than enjoy what time they had left.

Two hours later, they were curled up on the couch watching a second-rate movie, a half-eaten pizza on the coffee table in front of them. Or rather, he was watching the movie—Mollie had passed out before the first chase scene. In her sleep she was even more achingly beautiful, her long lashes making perfect half-moons against her creamy skin. Careful not to wake her, he stretched for the remote and turned off the movie, a blank screen replacing the rolling credits. He should leave and head back to his borrowed bed at the Sandpiper. But tonight was his last night in Paradise, and if he had the chance to hold her he was going to take it.

Sliding down, he tucked one arm under his head and rested the other across her chest. He could feel her heart beat, ticking away as if marking the time they had left. His own squeezed in response. No, he wasn’t leaving tonight. He’d grab every last minute he could.

He lay there a long time, just listening to her breathe before he finally drifted off into a restless kind of sleep. Sometime later, he woke to an elbow digging into his ribcage. Eyes closed, he tried to shift, realizing too late that the couch was a lot smaller than his bed back at the inn. He hit the floor with a solid thunk, Mollie landing on top of him.

“Ow!”

“Are you okay?” He smoothed his hands down her body, not sure what he was even feeling for.

“Yeah. I just bit my lip.”

His eyes had adjusted enough to the low light for him to see her gingerly touch her lip with the tips of her fingers. Still on top of him, her face was only inches away from his. Lifting his head he gently kissed the spot she’d touched.
