Sorry

As soon as I got home Mum asked if I’d managed to sort things out with Nadima.

‘No,’ I said.

She gave me one of her looks.

‘I didn’t get a chance!’ I protested. ‘She’s sitting next to Kara now.’

‘Oh!’ she said, sounding surprised but trying not to react.

‘And, well, there wasn’t really a moment when it was just me and Nadima – and I didn’t want to bring it up in front of everyone,’ I said.

‘Ah,’ said Mum. Then after a moment she added, ‘Well, we’ll just have to have a think about what to do next,’ and gave me a quick hug.

There was every danger I was going to cry, so I quickly slid off up to my room.

I sat on my bed and had a ‘think about what to do next’.

Once I’d got past some lovely fantasies involving shoving Kara off a cliff, or into a swimming pool full of great white sharks, or into a pit of poisonous snakes, I realised I wasn’t going to be able to rely on any of those wonderful scenarios and I’d have to sort it out for myself.

I went downstairs to the computer. Gus was on it.

‘Are you going to be long?’ I asked him.

‘Hours,’ he replied.

‘In that case, can I just borrow it for a few minutes?’

‘Nope!’

‘Please!’

‘Nope!’

‘But it’s really important!’

He paused and looked at me. ‘Seriously?’

‘Yes, seriously,’ I said.

‘OK. Ten minutes.’

I hugged him. ‘Thanks, Gus.’

He sloped off upstairs, calling over his shoulder, ‘Let me know if you need any help. AND LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU’RE DONE!’

I opened up a Word document. Which was a good start. But then I got stuck. I stared at the empty page. It’s always like this when I have to write anything. My mind goes blank.

Fortunately, because I’m dyslexic, I have a brilliant strategy to deal with this. I just stop thinking about what I want to write and think about what I want to say instead. Sometimes I even imagine myself talking to someone.

I opened Google Translate, typed ‘im sory’ into the English box and clicked on Kurdish. I got this:
