A great meditation master and spiritual teacher named Yogananda32 taught that we are very much like a radio, able to transmit and receive information and intelligence from anywhere in the cosmos—when our channels are clear, when there is no static interfering with the transmissions. One of the desires in life most of us have is to be in that state of clarity and focus, of Being Centered. People use this expression a lot, Being Centered. What does it mean to be centered? What are we centered in?

Generally when people say they want to “get centered” they mean they want to find a sense of peace or balance, harmony or focus. What we mean by Being Centered is being centered in present-moment Awareness. Then again, these are one and the same. We are in the state of peace when we are present. As in all of QuantumThink, the Intent of this distinction is that you experience Being Centered now as you read.

We want to distinguish present-moment Awareness as Awareness which is free of conditioning, free of judgments, and free of pre-conceived ideas or notions. We are making a distinction between Being Centered in this state of open Awareness as contrasted with being swept up by an ego state. What do we mean by an ego state? What we mean by “ego” is that part of us we could call our character part. If life were a movie the ego is our persona, our personality including our likes and dislikes and idiosyncrasies. The ego is like the role or character we play.

The ego often gets derided yet the ego is a necessity of worldly life defining our place in society, in our families, with our friends, and in the contributions we make through our work and creative expression. Some spiritual traditions suggest that the ego is an interference in attaining spiritual advancement. Consider that the ego is not a problem; it is only the identification with the ego’s limiting beliefs that can keep you stuck. The ego makes life interesting. The ego is the vehicle through which we contribute our talents and gifts to one another. The ego fleshes out our assorted roles adding vibrance to the mosaic of humanity. The idea is not to try to get rid of your ego, but to love your ego without attachment to it.
