Chapter 10

Kaden drove around for an hour trying to decide if she should check on Ashley. The brunette didn’t answer when Kaden called her cellphone. She must be asleep, Kaden thought.

She decided to get a cup of coffee and head back to the precinct. Her cellphone rang and Casey Dawson’s face flashed onto her screen.

“Please tell me you have Elise Mason,” Kaden answered.

“No such luck,” Casey piped, “but I do have some info you might be interest in.”

“Do tell,” Kaden jibed.

“Ashley Benton,” Casey said. “She’s been admitted to the Somerville County General Hospital.”

“Somerville County?” Kaden questioned. “That’s sixty miles from here. Why didn’t she go to Holy Cross Methodist?”

“I have no idea chief,” Casey answered. “I’m just letting you know it came up on my computer this morning.”

“Thanks, Casey,” Kaden said. “I owe you one.”

Driving slower than usual because of the hazardous road conditions, Kaden arrived at the hospital ninety minutes later. She asked for Ashley’s room number at the information desk and was told there was no such patient.

Kaden showed the woman her badge. “I’m with the police department,” she added.

The volunteer wrote a room number on a piece of paper and handed it to Kaden.

“Four fifteen,” Kaden mumbled as she punched the elevator number for the fourth floor. She found the room number and slowly opened the door. The room was dark with only a sliver of light slipping into the room from the bathroom.

Ashley was hooked to an IV and was sleeping. Kaden eased into the room and pulled a chair close to the bed. She planned to be there when the brunette opened her eyes. Kaden called Bevo and asked him to cover for her for a couple of hours.

“Kaden,” Ashley muttered. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to see about you,” Kaden replied. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing serious,” Ashley lisped. “You shouldn’t be here.”

Kaden noticed the slight speech defect and turned on the night light above the bed.

“Please, no,” Ashley pleaded.

Kaden gasped when she saw Ashley’s face. A big bruise marked the side of her face, her lips were swollen and a cut above her eye looked wickedly painful.

“What happened?” Kaden asked but she already knew the answer. “Who did this to you?”

Ashley turned her face away and said nothing.

The door to the room opened and a young doctor entered. “Oh good, you’re awake,” he greeted Ashley as he turned on the bright light above her bed.

“I’ll wait in the hall,” Kaden said slipping from the room to call Bevo. She arranged for her partner to pick up Boss and keep him until Kaden could get the dog.

“I may need to spend the night,” Kaden explained.

She paced the hall as the doctor examined Ashley. After what seemed like hours the man left Ashley’s room. Kaden pounced on him.

“What happened to her?” She demanded pulling back her coat to expose her badge.

“Domestic violence,” the doctor replied. “I’m pretty certain her husband used her for a punching bag.”

“What time was she admitted?” Kaden asked.

“Around nine this morning,” the doctor checked Ashley’s chart on his iPad.
