Rule number 4 for your website is to automate your follow-up to generate top-of-mind awareness. And this can be simple: an email newsletter that goes out once or twice a month, an auto responder series, blogs, the occasional special offer, subscriber-only content that you share with your list as your list starts to grow—whatever it is, you want to keep that cycle going.
So many speakers build a list—actually so many speakers don’t build the list—but if they do build a list, they never email those subscribers. (Guilty as charged—I did this back in the first two or three years of my own speaking business. Fun fact: I used Yahoo Groups for my rare “once-every-whenever-I-remembered-to-do-it” email blasts if you can imagine back to the stone ages of the internet!)
Let’s say that they opted into your list or they were in your audience a year ago, two years ago, three years ago, and you decide to email them. Suddenly, one day out of the blue, they get this random email, and now it looks like spam because they totally forgot who you are. They forgot where they met you. They forgot that association meeting three years ago.
There’s an old saying, “The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, the second best time to plant a tree is today”—so start your list-building and automated follow-up sequence today!
