Deborah understands how she has been spoiling her son; however, she is not able to relinquish her overprotectiveness. Delving deeper, we find that Deborah was raised in a household of three generations of women. Her mother and her grandmother coddled the boys and the men who lived for a short time under their roof. Deborah’s female role models taught her that men, instead of providing protection, were to be protected. Though she is not yet taking assertive steps to radically adjust her financial parenting, Deborah is able to admit that she has continued the financial legacy that she witnessed as she was growing up. And that is Deborah’s first step.

Leaving a child to struggle through distress may feel like a poor and risky choice for a parent, but parents do well to remember that children do not grow without struggling. I must encourage you to hold back and watch how your children attempt to solve their problems instead of allowing yourself to constantly rush in to make things better. Your parenting instincts, as well as most messages from the popular media, tell you to rush in and protect your child. But if you do that, the message to your child is, “You can’t do it,” rather than, “You must learn to do it.” The message to your child has to be, “You can do it, and I believe that you can.”
