THE YEAR 1990

Three years passed since Oliver and my wedding, and the strain of trying to have a child was putting pressure on us both. Oliver was trying to take on more legal cases to pay for all of my doctor and specialist bills. Most of his savings went for my gown and car. I was feeling guilty now because Becky, my sub-teacher, who leases the apartment was thinking of moving in with her boyfriend closer to the Everett School where both of us teach. I didn’t want to give up my apartment for fear our three-year marriage might take a turn for the worst. Even Oliver was frustrated with all we were going through, and we seemed to argue over the dumbest things. He assured me every day he cherished his wedding vows, ‘for better or for worse, to love you forever.’

Since last year was a complete failure for Oliver getting me pregnant, he gave up on keeping a record of the missing days of my monthly cycles. I was late a week but didn’t want to bring up the issue to him and have both of us getting upset for no reason.

In May, I started getting sick again right towards the end of the school year. At first, I only got light headaches and tried to avoid Oliver’s questioning or pass it off as a restless night sleep or even correcting my student exam tests.

In June, I start throwing up in the mornings but assure Oliver it has to be some allergies. I want to refuse to take a pregnancy test to be disappointed time and time again.

In our bathroom, while washing my face, I look at my husband in the reflection of the vanity mirror and sigh. “Oliver, please let me miss two periods before I take a test or go to the doctor. It is draining me to get my hopes up any more thinking I may be having a baby with each little side effect.”

Oliver glances back at the saddest face he ever saw. He turns me around and says, “Maybe we are just supposed to have each other, so let’s keep enjoying these moments. When we do finally have children, we’ll be very busy with them.” He takes me into the folds of his arms and whispers in my ear with a chuckle. “Let’s go try again for ‘old times sake.’”

Because of the morning round of lovemaking, Oliver took a different rail on the subway to get to his office which is on the other side of town. He phoned in to work on his way stating he would be late but gave no reason as to why.

In September, I started to worry I may be getting sick at the start of the school year again. I really couldn’t afford to have sick days on my job anymore and was reminded that information from the principal. I thought a sinus cold was coming on to me, so before the first day back, I made a family doctor visit to get a quick physical.
