Stepan walked Anya to her room without uttering a word. In his time as a butler of sorts, he had seen a few things, but as a brother and once as a father, he knew young girls. They were gardens of Eden-like beauty and rich, bountiful reward, but they also had to be tended to constantly and sometimes, cut down to size.
As he watched Anya, chin up, eyes forward, marching toward her destination, he could see the leader in her dying to be let out, but he knew that like anything else, if guided in the wrong direction, her stubbornness would eventually lead to her demise instead of her victory. The boss was busy, and the mistress of the house near a breakdown, so he took it upon himself to step in and say something that might help adjust the pre-pubescent girl’s rampage.
“I can take it from here,” Anya said, arriving at her bedroom door. She put her hand on the knob and rolled her eyes. “Let mom know, so she doesn’t have to put herself out by coming here and checking for yourself.”
Stepan put his hand on the girl’s thin shoulder and turned her around. “Hey,” he said, kneeling down on one knee in front of her.
Anya frowned. “Are you proposing?”
“I’m proposing a new attitude for you.” He exhaled a breath. “All of this is too much for you, I’m sure.”
“What gave me away?” Anya snapped. Folding her arms across her chest, she looked down the hall. “Isn’t it inappropriate for you to be talking to me alone?”
“I’m not alone.” He pointed toward the cameras in the corner of the hallway. “No one here ever is.” Twisting up his lip, he wiped a hand over his beard. “I remember what you were like when you just a little bitty girl running behind Davyd in Prague.”
Just the mention of his name made Anya tense. “Things have changed since then.”
“And not always for the better. You feel sad, and I’m sure scared that you’re in the middle of another battle for your survival.” He could see Anya’s eyes start to glisten. “It’s okay. Everyone sympathizes with you, your mother, most of all.”
“So, why doesn’t she say so?” Anya asked, sincerely. There was a changing look on her face, like she wanted to be honest, but was afraid to with a man who had just recently come barreling back into their lives. “She’s always busy. Always. Before this, we used to spend all of our time cooking and shopping and doing things together, but now, she’s locked in a room with the women of the house, and I’m left with my stupid baby brothers. The only thing that keeps me sane in this house is Dylan because he’s bored too. Even Daddy is always busy now. It’s unfair. Grandma told me that I deserved the world, that I shouldn’t have to be going through this. Then, mom got mad when I told her.”
Stepan shrugged. All her other points had been legitimate, except for the last one.
