Practice
• Schedule time on your calendar to take your SMILE actions. For new daily habits, allow yourself at least six weeks of practice before they become part of your usual routine.
• If you are not using some sort of daily, weekly and monthly planning system, experiment with different ones until you find something that works for you as your life is now. Don’t worry about being “old school” or “analog” if it works for you. Your options include:
a) An electronic calendar (e.g., Google, iCal, MS Outlook)
b) The Third Ear Daily Planner
c) Notebooks
d) A Day Runner or Franklin Planner
e) A desk or wall calendar
f) A dry erase calendar
g) Something you create
• Schedule the time you need to complete the exercises in this book. There is a recommended schedule in the Appendix.
• If you are still skeptical about the program, use the process to:
a) Define the conflict. Do you disagree with everything I have to say or specific techniques? Do you doubt the science? Do you disagree about our abilities to resolve any conflict?
b) Identify your interests. What did you want from this book? What did you think you were buying? What did you believe about conflict? What did you expect? What do you need to do next or urgently?
c) Play with the possibilities. If you could have this conflict resolve in any way possible, what would happen?
d) Create the future. What actions can you take to have your ideal resolution become your reality?
e) Stay on PARR. Continue to the next practice opportunity, and don’t abandon this program until you have given full effort for 12 weeks.
• Ask at least three people who support your personal growth to hold you accountable for taking your SMILE actions.
a) Give a weekly report on the actions taken, the result and your assessment of your effectiveness.
b) Ask for specific help in taking the actions, despite doubt, fear, time, or other obstacles.
c) Invite them to join you in some of the actions.
