âAnd, when she got in the car to go drive somewhere in the country, he came out and ripped the keys out so she couldnât drive,â Christensen recalled.
When Christensen became aware of the womanâs dilemma, she knew her role as a prosecutor was to help the woman escape the situation. And, she did just that.
But, that womanâs ordeal turned out far less lethal than Dixieâs. That woman took advantage of the protection order system over the following year.
âIt got hairy many times,â Christensen recalled. âIn one particular case, her husband faxed a copy of a tombstone with her name on it.â
Actually, the picture of the womanâs name on the tombstone was great evidence for the prosecutorâs office to prove the protective order was violated.
Ultimately, the couple divorced, and the protective order stayed in effect for at least a couple of years.
âAnd now, thatâs been dismissed and they live in the same county, they both have remarried other people, and I think are doing well,â Christensen testified.
The children also have visitation rights with their dad.
âItâs an example where she can be protected and the violence can stop,â Christensen testified.
On the contrary, Dixieâs case of domestic abuse ended with the murder of her abuser, the jury was reminded.
âI donât believe this case had to end this way,â Christensen testified. âI think there were choices that we gave Dixie, in particular, that she chose not to take, and those choices have been proven over and over to be effective if allowed to take their course.â
