“And, when she got in the car to go drive somewhere in the country, he came out and ripped the keys out so she couldn’t drive,” Christensen recalled.

When Christensen became aware of the woman’s dilemma, she knew her role as a prosecutor was to help the woman escape the situation. And, she did just that.

But, that woman’s ordeal turned out far less lethal than Dixie’s. That woman took advantage of the protection order system over the following year.

“It got hairy many times,” Christensen recalled. “In one particular case, her husband faxed a copy of a tombstone with her name on it.”

Actually, the picture of the woman’s name on the tombstone was great evidence for the prosecutor’s office to prove the protective order was violated.

Ultimately, the couple divorced, and the protective order stayed in effect for at least a couple of years.

“And now, that’s been dismissed and they live in the same county, they both have remarried other people, and I think are doing well,” Christensen testified.

The children also have visitation rights with their dad.

“It’s an example where she can be protected and the violence can stop,” Christensen testified.

On the contrary, Dixie’s case of domestic abuse ended with the murder of her abuser, the jury was reminded.

“I don’t believe this case had to end this way,” Christensen testified. “I think there were choices that we gave Dixie, in particular, that she chose not to take, and those choices have been proven over and over to be effective if allowed to take their course.”
