Although cost may be an issue, your lawyerâs hourly rate should not determine who you select to represent you. Nor should you necessarily be looking at who has historically represented those in the public eye. You are looking for someone who:
⢠is a specialist family solicitor.
⢠has a sufficient level or air of seniority to hold the awe of your spouse â you do not want your case to be passed to the junior solicitor on the grounds of lower cost. Whilst there may be work which can be carried out by a more junior lawyer, you need someone with robust experience to deal directly with the narcissist.
⢠understands all methods of possible dispute resolution currently available, and specifically which methods should be avoided with a narcissist, as well as which ones have a good chance of success (see page 178 for out of court dispute resolution methods).
⢠will recognise the behaviour traits to which you have been subjected, and if they donât already fully understand NPD, will be prepared to listen carefully and learn about what they will be up against.
⢠can manage the process and advise you specifically on how to deal with your particular situation (some lawyers prefer to just ask for your instructions without advising you â this will not be appropriate in your case).
⢠is also a trained mediator, as their wider skill set may mean that they are more able to recognise traits of NPD and as a consequence be more able to provide the level of care and support which you will require.
⢠has adequate time to devote to your case, and who, once again, will not simply be overseeing a junior solicitor.
