CHAPTER 16

“When a morph takes power, they change it. They take its purpose and can modify it for their own.”—The Morph’s Burden (Elizabeth Drexler)

“You should eat something,” my father said, moving toward the kitchen. “Can’t think clearly on an empty stomach.”

It was such an unexpectedly normal thing for him to say that I just stared at his retreating back. The man who’d just shown me photos of my mother’s mutilated body was now offering to make me a sandwich. The cognitive dissonance was dizzying.

I followed him into the kitchen—spotless like the rest of the house, with immaculate but untouched appliances. The refrigerator was plastered with tactical maps of the city, each one marked with color-coded pins. No family photos, no shopping lists, no children’s drawings—unless you counted the fae Court sigils I’d drawn when I was nine, which were framed on the wall like priceless art.

“So let me get this straight,” I said, leaning against the counter while he pulled ingredients from the fridge. “Mom was a morph. I inherited the ability from her. The Unseelie Court killed her for it. And now they’re hunting others like us.”

“That’s the simplified version.” He assembled sandwiches with military precision: bread, mayo, turkey, cheese, lettuce. Two identical stacks. “But there’s more to it. The morphing ability doesn’t just appear randomly. It’s genetic, yes, but its origins are much older than most people realize.”

He slid a plate toward me and gestured to the kitchen table. I sat, more out of habit than hunger.

“Our family line can be traced back to the early 1600s,” he continued, sitting across from me. “A time when the barriers between realms were more permeable and fae interaction with humans was more common. Your mother’s ancestors had direct contact with both Courts.”

“Contact,” I repeated. “What kind of contact?”

“Intimate.” His expression remained neutral. “There were unions between humans and fae. Children born with one foot in each world.”

I nearly choked on my sandwich. “Are you saying I’m part fae?”

“Not in any meaningful biological sense. The actual fae DNA has been diluted over centuries. But the magical potential—that remains. It’s why morphs can handle energies that would kill ordinary humans. It’s why your mother could absorb fae magic directly. And it’s why the Courts are so interested in people like you.”

I put down my sandwich, appetite gone. “So we’re what—the magical equivalent of mixed-race kids that nobody wants to acknowledge?”

“More like the descendants of ancient royalty that both sides want to either control or eliminate.” He took a bite of his sandwich, chewing methodically. “The Courts both fear what might happen if morphs ever realized their full potential.”

“Which is what, exactly?”

“That’s the question, isn’t it?” He stood, gesturing for me to follow. “Finish your sandwich. There’s something I need to show you.”

I grabbed the remainder of my food and trailed after him down a hallway I’d never been allowed to enter as a kid. At the end was a door I remembered all too well—the forbidden room. The one that had been locked my entire childhood, the one I’d tried and failed to pick my way into multiple times.
