Chapter 40

When Ryn returned to the guesthouse after Beau’s concert, she undressed and called Angela. Beau’s song still looped in her head, and she knew she’d never relax waiting for Jensen’s call.

Elijah picked up. “’Sup?”

“Hey! I’m glad to hear you sound so …”

“Chipper? Like myself? Ready to go bar huntin’ with my bare hands?”

“Yeah. Bar huntin’.” She swallowed tears. Elijah was bigger than most grizzlies and just as tough. “Was it a bar that conked you on the head?”

“No. Definitely not a bar. Some Fed—rogue, maybe.”

Her stomach dropped. “Angela told you about the letter to Beau? Why would any federal agency have an interest in that letter?”

“Who says they do?”

“Dammit, you don’t believe in coincidences any more than I do.”

“Agreed. I also don’t believe in jumping to conclusions. I don’t know who conked me on the head. I intend to find out. When are you coming home?”

“Tomorrow. And before you go off on my cutting the trip short, Will suggested I leave. Adamantly suggested, I’ll add. He thinks we’re more likely to figure out the letter if we’re back in California.”

“That’s one opinion. What time you arriving?”

“Around two at the airport. Will hired a limo to take us home … so figure another forty-five minutes.”

“Okay. I’ve gotta get my head checked at ten. Angela and I should be back before you land. I’ve got some ideas.”

“You know Zack Jensen’s working on this, too?” She frowned. Had she told Angela?

“If I knew, I forgot. Zack and I aren’t best buddies, but we can work together.” He paused, and then added, “Or not.”

With ten minutes to kill before Jensen called, Ryn went through her nightly bedtime routine. She spent an extra minute brushing her hair, but her nerve endings tingled like electrical wires. The memory of Beau’s song blocked the dozens of questions she intended to ask Jensen. She glanced at the clock and opened the French door. Moonlight streamed into the bedroom. She imagined Angela and Molly sitting by the koi pond without speaking. God, I can hardly wait to get home.

Her cell chirped at ten straight up. At least he’s punctual.

Not particularly socially adept, though. He ignored a greeting and said, “Beau’s letter looks like the tip of an iceberg.”

Her heart missed a beat. “Meaning?”

“Meaning, Russians are involved. Meaning a lot of people get whacked. Sometimes, innocent people.”

“Is this the cheery part of your report?” she snapped.

“Let’s see,” he countered in snippy singsong. “Chalk up a young woman missing since one o’clock. Chalk up one woman dead at four. Chalk up a threat to my daughter before that. All in one afternoon. Enough cheer?”

“Tell me you’re on top of this.” Doubt colored her sarcasm.

“Tomorrow’s a new day. I still have four or five hours of work tonight. I’ll check in with you tomorrow—”

“Hold on. I’m flying back to California in the morning. I should be home by three. In the meantime, touch base with Elijah White. He’s—”

“I know who Elijah White is. Does King know he’s working the case? Who’s gonna bring him up to speed?”

“That would be you, Zack Jensen.
