Chapter Eight

A Message and More

The soldier stood there, waiting for me to answer.

“What?” I said, suddenly scared. What should I do? I couldn’t run away. The soldier would just chase me and he’d get mad. And I couldn’t leave Hannah and Noah.

“You are to bring this message to the soldiers stationed on the bakers’ street, near the market square.” He held out something small and flat.

“B-but I d-don’t know where that is,” I said. I could hardly speak, I was so scared.

“We are just visitors, sir,” said Hannah. “We don’t know our way around the city.”

“Where are you staying? I will go and get your father to bring the message, then,” said the soldier angrily.

Oh no! I thought. We couldn’t show them where we were staying. I didn’t want to get Jonathan and his family in trouble.

“W-well,” I said. “I-I could bring it i-if you tell me how to get there.”

“Hmph,” said the soldier. He pointed down the street. “It is down that way. Keep going for five or six streets, and turn right at the market—although there is no one selling anything today, as it’s the Sabbath. Turn right at the empty square and about one street down is the bakers’ street. There are soldiers waiting for this message.”

I took the flat thing he gave me. I didn’t understand how it was a message. It was like a sandwich of two thin pieces of wood with metal rings connecting them on one side. We turned and started off down the street.

“You! Girl! There is no need to go with him. Take your little brother back to where you are staying. We do not want people out on the streets today.”
