Rainbow Street was short and narrow. At the end, surrounded by a tall wire fence, was a big garden with shady trees and green lawns. The building at its front was pale blue, with a bright rainbow arching over the cheery, cherry-red door.

The man who’d found Bella left his own dog in the car and led the young beagle into the waiting room.

“Can I help you?” asked a gray parrot on a perch above the desk. He sounded exactly like an old man.

A woman with a name tag that said MONA and long dark hair wound up above a kind face came out from behind the desk. “I think I just talked to your owners!” she told the filthy beagle.

“I found her running in the bushes by the beach,” the man explained. “She must have been hunting.”

“She smells like she caught a dead fish,” said Mona, crinkling her nose. “I’m afraid you’re going to need a bath, little girl! But I’m going to check your microchip first—I’d hate to call the wrong owners.”
