The feminist ‘Third Wave’

In recent years, disabled women have become regular contributors to the revived International Women’s Day events, part of a rising third wave of feminist activism. Their contribution is helping to ensure that we are recognised as equal contributors to the debate and to the solutions to violence against women and girls. As speakers Michele Daley and Eleanor Lisney told participants:

Being here today for both of us is about raising the voices of our disabled sisters. It is also about ensuring our recognition within this struggle for human rights… We all have a responsibility to ensure disabled women are recognised and respected as equals within this struggle for all of our voices to be heard – ‘we are women too’! (Daley and Lisney 2010)

The work of these individuals, forums and networks is slowly helping to change the way we think about violence against disabled women and girls. They have helped introduce the issues of violence against disabled women to the policy agenda, and to increase awareness of the issues amongst disabled and women’s organisations. The next step is to ensure that policy- and decision-makers take on board the changes necessary to include disabled women.
