HENLI

Chains’s bike slides into my driveway, along with a trail of five pickup trucks behind him. All are driven by men in matching leather vests, though they don’t look exactly like Chains’s and Brick’s.

These have patches on them that say PROSPECT.

I don’t know what any of this means, but they breeze right past me and walk into the house without a single word.

“What on earth?” I ask on a whispered breath.

Chains lets out a laugh, then jerks his chin toward the house, his eyes finding and holding mine.

I don’t know him very well. I looked at two homes with him for a total of possibly thirty minutes. That’s all, and now he’s standing right here in my driveway, his eyes focused on me, a smile spread across his face.

“Legacy called us. Said he was running behind getting here and asked if we’d help.”

“And you all just ran down here?” I ask.

He has a funny look on his face, but I can’t read it. He clears his throat, then shakes his head once.

“Family, babe.” The words come out with a finality that I can’t really believe.

Family.

I mean, my mother and father would help if I asked. They’re good people who love me. Penelope wouldn’t do shit, but to be fair, that is just who the hell she is. I’m not sure any of my cousins would come if I asked, either. It would have to be something really serious—life or death, I think.

“Wow,” I exhale.

I’m not sure what else to say. I have a million things I could add to that, but the way he’s staring at me, I decide not to. It’s not that he makes me feel uncomfortable by any means, but he is clearly reading me and sees far too much for my liking.

He laughs again, slings his arm across my shoulders, and together, we walk into the house. The rest of the afternoon is spent with me telling the guys what to load up and what stays here for the charity shop that is going to come and pick up my donations.

Then, we go to the new place to unload it all. I take a detour to buy a bunch of beer and put in a call to the local pizza place for an order to be delivered. I don’t know what kind of pizza the guys like, but they’re all men’s men, so I decide on meat lovers delight and call it a day.

When I pull into my new driveway, I shift the car into park and look around for a moment in silence. I need this moment to take everything in and just let it all soak deep into my bones. I cannot believe this is going to be my new home.

Though, I don’t know for how long. If I can’t find a job, what little savings I have will be gone in the first month. Maybe I can stretch it out to six weeks, but that is going to be a real stretch.

God, just the thought of being jobless and having to move back in with my parents makes me feel really icky.
