Chapter Sixteen
Sure Thing, Baby
Valentina
We followed behind the van for a good fifteen minutes, and even I had to admit things werenât looking good. And nobody was speaking to me any longer, but whatever.
Weâd either live together or weâd die together. If they wanted to freeze me out for it then so be it. I wasnât about to force them to pay attention to me, so fuck it.
The dirt road weâd been driving down forever was surrounded by forest, and I didnât think the moon was bigger than a sliver in the sky, making the night seem darker than it should have been.
The van turned down a long driveway, and finally, the trees opened up and were replaced by tall grass that should have been cut about ten years ago.
The driveway came to a stop in front of an ancient, decrepit, run-down farmhouse that looked in danger of falling down if a strong breeze came along. No way was I going in there. It was probably haunted, for fuckâs sake.
There were two motorcycles parked in front of the house with two men standing by them. Even in the dark, I could tell one of them was Hawk. He had long, dirty blond hair down to his shoulders, and he was far bigger than I thought heâd be.
He was clad in dark jeans with a rip in one knee, the standard black biker boots, and a black leather jacket that had patches sewn onto it, which I was sure had something to do with his club. Iâd have to wait until I got closer to him so I could get a better look at the patches, and I definitely wanted to because my curiosity wouldnât allow anything else. If he seemed receptive of my curiosity, maybe Iâd even ask him a few questions about their meanings and the biker lifestyle in general.
Curiosity killed the cat.
Sometimes I had to remind myself of that. My cloistered upbringing didnât really help at all with the situation, but instead it made me want to do all these things I knew I shouldnât.
The driverâs side door on the kidnapper van opened, and out stepped another biker with a matching leather jacket. He left the headlights on as he walked up to his buddies. He crossed his arms over his chest and tried to look as intimidating as Hawk just did naturally.
He failed.
âLetâs go, boys,â I said with confidence I mostly had to fake, but we were already here, and it was too late to back out now.
We got out of the SUV, all five of us, and the bikers tensed, seeing as they were now outnumbered. I didnât like that, and I didnât think it was good for things to start off in a negative way because Roarke would drag me out of here in a heartbeat, and he wouldnât even hesitate to leave the rest of our crew behind.
Fuck.
I focused on Hawk and headed directly toward him. The bikers all straightened away from their bikes, and if possible, grew even more alert.
