Chapter 6

6. Embrace the Suck: How to Not Lose Your Mind while Becoming Dirt Rich

“This could be yours,” says the man in the straw hat and floral shirt. He sips from a huge round salt-rimmed glass with a long stem and a tiny green umbrella. Behind him, an immense mansion looms behind an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by decorative stone.

“And this!”

The television image pops to the same man in a tuxedo leaning on a red Ferrari with a stunning blonde woman in a black cocktail dress on his arm. She moves her hand to her round hip while pursing her lips and lowering her eyes as she stares into the camera.

“And the best part is,” he says, now in an office sitting in front of a laptop, palm trees and an aquamarine bay outside the window, “you need to work only one hour a week!”

He turns his attention to the laptop, clicks the mouse once, and slams it shut. He leans back in his chair, folding his fingers behind his head.

“Done!” he says with a yawn. “Man, am I tired!”

OK, enough, right?

You know what I’m talking about. If you’ve been alive at all in the twenty-first century, you’ve seen late-night infomercial gurus peddling dreams of instant unlimited riches for almost no work.

Even the term late-night infomercial has almost no meaning anymore because these scam artists can be found 24/7 on the internet, promising untold wealth only if you buy their course for an outrageous fee in several easy installments.

Nowadays, it seems like almost anyone can set themselves up as a guru selling almost any made up BS, charge thousands for it, and attract a legion of followers based almost solely on their personality.

A huge chunk of this market is focused on real estate. This dates back to the early days of information products in the 1970s when smarmy get-rich-quick peddlers would sell cassette tapes through direct mail on how to buy houses for no money down.

It’s only gotten worse since then, with hucksters promising riches while making real estate sound so easy. Just like taking a nap and then money arrives in your account.

Now, the truth is that when I nap, money does arrive in my account.

I also freely admit that sometimes in my marketing it can look easy, but that’s only because I’ve been doing it for so long.

I promise you this: you’ll never see me standing in front of a mansion promising you that the path to success is an easy straight line that requires no work.

True, once you do the work and set the machine up, your days get easier, even a lot easier. To get to that point, however, requires commitment, a sometimes-steep learning curve, and the mental strength to embrace the suck and push through the dips.

I’m blessed to have an easier life now, but to get here, I had to hit some brick walls, learn some hard lessons, and in many ways start over again several times.

One of my favorite books is Seth Godin’s The Dip.
