Chapter Ten

I swear, if I wasn’t genuinely frightened of the guy, I would have turned around and said, “Who pissed in your corn flakes?” or something like that. But, I saw that look on his face. This wasn’t the time to mess with Stan.

I turned around a minute later, when I was about to go into the Hardline, and he was gone - like he vanished. I would have noticed his car parked on the street. He just disappeared.

Shit - not in the office. There’s an old saying - Don’t shit where you eat. You know why it’s an old saying? ’Cause it’s true as fuck. If anybody should know that, it’s Stan. I’m picturing a couple dead Mexicans, or black guys, and having to cut the carpet out, maybe even have to cut them up - which is probably more difficult than you’d think - and douse the place with bleach. Every time I do one of these jobs, it’s more work than it sounds like. And, quite honestly, I’m getting tired of this crap.

I walked in and went right to the office. It was locked. Brilliant. So, I went right up to Mike at the bar.

“Hey, Mike. I need the keys to the office.”

“Yeah, I can’t do that.”

“Mike, give me the fuckin’ keys to the office, now.”

He handed them over.

“Tough guy.”

He just smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

I unlocked the door and went in. Holy mother of hell. I ran over and ripped the tape off of Bruno’s mouth. Took off a bunch of his hair. Must have hurt like crazy.

“What the fuck? You okay?”

I looked over at the women, one alive, and one just…obliterated.

“No, we’re not okay,” he said, as I tried to sit the woman up who was still breathing.

“What the hell happened here?”

“Get some bolt cutters and bandages, or towels,” Bruno said.

“Yeah, yeah. I’ll be right back.”

I closed the door and locked it. Then I ran down the street and drove my truck around to the back of the Hardline. I grabbed the bolt cutters from the tool box and unlocked the back door and went in.

In a minute, I had them cut away from the beams and started looking for towels. I ran out to the bar and took some from under the register.

“Mike, kick everybody out of here. Then, you’re done for the day. Let me know when you’re leaving and I’ll lock up behind you. We’re going to be here awhile. Stay out of the office.”

“What the hell? I gotta earn.”

“Do it!”

“Yes, sir.”

When I went back in, Bruno was huddled with the other woman, holding her and straightening her hair, and dress.

“I’m sorry, baby. I’m so sorry,” as he pulled her close to him, even though she was trying to push him away.

“Who’s that?”

“Lisa - my wife.”

“Oh, fuck.”

The scene started to develop in my head.

“Oh, God. Let me guess, that’s Dorothy?”

“Yeah. Used to be, anyway. Poor lady,” Bruno said, sincerely.

“Look, Dimitri. We got to get her to the hospital.”

“I’m not going to the fucking hospital.
