Yunnanosaurus (you-NAN-oh-SORE-us)

Age: 200-185 mya

Size: 23 ft long

Weight: 1,500 lbs

Location: Southern China

Food: Herbivore

Yunnanosaurus was a rich find in the Yunnan Province of China, an area from which this dinosaur gets its name. Scientists uncovered 20 skeletons, two of which included skulls. One of those skulls contained 60 teeth. The shape of the teeth shows a dinosaur that spent its time chewing plant material in Jurassic woodlands. An examination of wear patterns on the teeth suggest that Yunnanosaurus kept them sharp by grinding them together as it chewed.

Dino Droppings

Add something to the list of dinosaur remnants found by paleontologists and fossil hunters: coprolites, or dinosaur dung. Studying dinosaur poop may not seem like someone's dream job, IciAt it does provide a great deal of evidence about what dinosaurs ate.

Once mined in England as fertilizer because they were rich in phosphorus, coprolites were finally recognized for what they really were during the 1830s. famous fossil hunter Mary Anning found stones in dinosaur bellies and said she found fish bones inside those stones. William Buckland named them with a Greek term that means "dung stones."

Karen Chin has a large collection of coprolites, and she is recognized as a world expert in dino dung. She slices them into thin sections and looks at them under a microscope. She searches for seeds, scales, bones, and leaves. She has even uncovered evidence that dung beetles were hard at work doing their thankless task during the age of the dinosaurs.
