Chapter 8

The sun was sinking low towards the horizon, and the giant leaves of prehistoric trees reached up to meet it. Fluffy clouds, pink-tinged in the early evening light, were scattered like cotton balls across the wide Missouri sky.

Tallulah turned on the bathroom light. She’d chosen one of her only two semi-formal outfits: a fitted, knee-length black halter dress to show off her shoulders, with a thin white sweater stashed in her black leather handbag in case of an evening chill. Black leather platform loafers added two inches of height, though not enough to make her anything other than petite. She went meticulously through the routine she’d always used for evenings out: tinted cream, a hint of shimmer, blush, winged dark-brown eyeliner to bring out the forest depths of her green eyes. Warm red lipstick.

She doubted she’d need blush at dinner with Reid.

She dabbed a tiny bit of gloss onto her lips. Her skin shimmered and her eyes shone. For the first time in a long time, she felt beautiful. Desirable.

It was also the first time in a long time that she’d felt desire.

Her heart began to pound again. It had been years since Omondi had gone back home, and the men she’d been with since then had been… unremarkable. Perfectly nice, for the most part, with one or two exceptions that she’d nipped in the bud and blocked on every channel. Nice-looking, with nice jobs, holding nice conversations. They’d gone to restaurants and bars and comedy nights, had a few drinks, chatted about their daily lives and current events. Sometimes they’d gone out again, and then again, for more drinks and dinners and shows. Occasionally they’d bring her home for a nightcap, looking out over the city lights from a sixteenth-floor condo or gazing at uplit trees in the backyard of a townhouse, and she would end up in their bed. White sheets or grey sheets or blue sheets, the masculine scent of beard balm and Old Spice. 90s slow jams or smooth jazz or chillhop. Sometimes, if the mood was right, she could even convince herself for a while that there was something deeper, as they kissed and touched and moaned.

But it never lasted. There was always something empty about it.

Dinosaurs bored most of them, though they listened politely, as one does on a date. Most of them had been looking for a girl who was smart but not too smart, successful but not more successful than they were. Sex with them had been perfectly nice, but there had never been any real passion. It felt performative. At the end of the night, or in the bright light of morning, regardless of how satisfied she was physically, Tallulah had always been a bit sad and wistful. Longing for that deep connection that never came.

Until now.

Until Reid.

The door to the outside squeaked as it opened, and then there was a knock at the bedroom door, startling Tallulah. “It’s Rowan. Reid asked me to fetch you. I figured you’d be ten minutes late.
