Matter and energy are two concepts that are closely related to any chemical reaction; information and computation also appear to play fundamental roles. What takes place during chemical reactions in plants? In the language of information and computation, chemical reactions in plants help cells perform basic computations, such as addition, subtraction, or multiplication. Studies have also shown that plantsâ leaves appear to regulate their breathing by conducting simple calculationsâthat is, they perform computations.
A further example in our physical world that helps to show how information is fundamental is best exemplified by work that is done in the manufacturing industry. One example is a car factory, which transforms materials (matter) and requires electricity (energy) while dealing with customers by processing orders and queries (information).
