The architecture and design of communication systems proposed by Shannon can be regarded as a universal model of a general communication system, because the system has applications not only in communication theory but also in various fields of knowledge, ranging from the theory of computing machines to the design of telephone exchanges. The system is arguably one of the greatest contributions in the history of communication. The design is available on page 2 of Shannon’s[42] “A Mathematical Theory of Communication”, which demonstrates how any communication system can easily be separated into independent, distinct components. No wonder all modern communication systems are essentially based on Shannon’s architectural model.
