My Personal Decision and Indecision

I’m reminded of an instance in my own career while I was the Head of Marketing at Travelzoo. As the Internet travel industry exploded, we were faced with a difficult decision. Our core product was our weekly Top 20 List. This was, and still continues to be, a list of the week’s 20 best travel deals. If we wanted to continue to grow as a company we considered if we should change into more of an Expedia, Orbitz, or Hotwire type of model that actually took the bookings on site.

This idea had potential for much more revenue and gave us greater control than relying on travel companies and online travel agents having enough great deals and the willingness to pay Travelzoo to include these deals in the Top 20 List. Spearheaded by founder and CEO Ralph Bartel, the decision was made to continue our current core business model. No radical changes would be made, but we would expand into various foreign markets (Europe, Asia, and others) with this model. Since that time, Travelzoo has increased its subscribers from 8 million to 22 million and counting. It’s not that the decision was right or not (it was), it was that a decision was made. Knowing this decision enabled the employees to better focus on the mission.
