Another anti-Corbyn feeding frenzy under way. This one triggered by a letter from the Board of Deputies of British Jews accusing Labour of ‘an institutional failure to tackle antisemitism’ and describing Jeremy as ‘a figurehead for an antisemitic political culture based on obsessive hatred of Israel’. By evening Jeremy had issued a long conciliatory letter, offering to meet with Jewish leaders, but I doubt whether anything he can say or do will appease them. This evening rival groups of Jews – pro- and anti-Corbyn – were demonstrating outside Parliament. Several of the usual suspects (and one or two who are not) in the parliamentary party were on parade, stirring the pot. All very unfortunate and undoubtedly damaging. Although Jeremy is no antisemite, he does if truth be told bring with him considerable baggage which is being assiduously mined with a view to inflicting maximum damage.
