Ideology of Representation

The form and strategic rules of videological culture; we might perhaps think of representationalism as the ideology of ideologies (Sandywell, 1996, volume 1). Here the fundamental theme is not so much the cognitive work of ideology at the level of beliefs and explicit discourse, as the inscription of representational metaphors in social practices, everyday activities and institutions. The ideology of mimetic representation is deeply embedded in a range of influential European institutional spheres, especially in the discursive frameworks of artistic, educational and technological systems (cf. Hyman, 1989).
