JAPANESE RELIGIONS Today Shinto, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity are the major religious movements of Japan. The earliest religion of the Japanese was primarily a naive nature worship in which any object that gave rise to fear or awe was regarded as a kami. There were two groups of deities: seven generations of celestial gods and a number of terrestrial gods. The celestial gods represented creative or productive powers. The last pair of these celestial deities, Izanagi and Izanami, were supposed to have produced the Japanese Archipelago.
