The sequence of events had all happened so quickly Lily couldn’t take them in. Sagging back against the pillow, she pored over the facts. Had Karl really been a danger? she wondered. He only wanted to deliver a letter to Ethel and he was defenceless. Karl had given her a turn but, to be fair, how was he to have known that she would be there?

She thought of the paper that had dropped to the floor. Favouring her non-injured side, Lily swung her legs over the edge of the bed and looked to the floor for the piece of paper. It wasn’t there. It must have fluttered under the bed, Lily thought, and presumably that’s why the soldier hadn’t seen it. She thought of the baby she might be carrying and, rather than risk getting down on all fours, she swept her foot beneath the bed. When she touched the paper, for a moment she felt elated. She managed to retrieve the paper with her foot and bent down to pick it up.

What she held in her hand was a letter, she realised, though looking at it she didn’t understand it, as it was written, she presumed, in German. She did, though, recognise Ethel’s name and what looked like an address. She remembered that Ethel’s dad was German, so Karl must have known she could read the language.
