RUTH AND LUCY JOINED the A3 and headed north towards London. They had said very little about their conversation with Safet Dudic. Ruth was digesting what he had told them. Why was he lying to them? Did he know about Hamzar Mujicâs sighting of Simo Petrovic?
They stopped at some traffic lights. Ruth gazed up at the sky that was darkening with clouds. She wished it wouldnât rain. She was hoping to take Ella up to the swings on Clapham Common after nursery. Ella had only asked where âDaddyâ was a couple of times. Ruth explained that he was just staying with a friend. Ella shrugged. She was used to Danâs nocturnal life and so his disappearance from their lives hadnât struck her as anything particularly new.
âDudic knew, didnât he?â Lucy said, breaking Ruthâs train of thought.
âAbout Petrovic?â
âYeah. He wasnât surprised by the news that Hamzar Mujic had seen him.â
âNot one bit. And he was terrified by the time we left.â
âIâve seen grief and shock before. But that wasnât it. He was shit scared.â
âScared that he is going to be next?â Lucy suggested.
Ruth shrugged. âPossibly. But why not tell us what he knows?â
âMaybe he doesnât trust the police? From what I remember, the Bosnian police were mainly Serbian. They were implicated in war crimes against Muslim civilians.â
âThat would explain it,â Ruth said.
âWe have four ageing Bosnian Muslims who grew up in the same village. Theyâre all in touch with each other to varying degrees. What happens when Mujic sees Petrovic at Waterloo?â Lucy asked.
Glancing into the wing mirror, Ruth noticed a black BMW behind them. It pulled out for a few seconds as it tried to overtake them.
âHe rings them all. He tells them who heâs seen. This is the man that ruined their lives and murdered their friends and family,â Ruth said. She glanced back and saw that the BMW was still very close behind.
âWhatâs with the BMW behind us? she asked.
âGod knows. I thought it was a boy racer with a small knob.â
Ruth smiled. âUsually is ... You think they decided to do something with this information about Petrovic?â
Lucy nodded. âYes. Maybe they decided that they donât trust the police with it, so theyâre going to contact a journalist?â
âThat doesnât explain the missing papers from Mujicâs flat. The stuff that had been ripped from the board,â Ruth said. âHe was working on something that someone didnât want us to see.â She looked over at Lucy. âThey were tracking Petrovic down themselves and they were going to murder him.â
âExcept Petrovic and his cronies found out and decided to kill them all first.â
Ruth raised an eyebrow. âSlight problem with our theory.â
âWhich is ...?â
âHow does Petrovic find out that these ageing vigilantes are planning for his death?â
âNo idea. Maybe they asked the wrong person or went to the wrong place?â Lucy glared in her rear-view mirror. âBloody idiot! Itâs a single-lane, you dickhead.â
Ruth frowned as she looked again in the wing mirror.
âProblem?â she asked.
âI donât know. This BMW has been behind us since we passed the turning to Chessington,â Lucy said quietly.
