Chapter 14

Before she went after Claire, the Twin picked up Cornelius and threw him into a corner of the room. He slammed against the wall and slumped to the ground. Then, the Twin ignited a TNT block and tossed it at Cornelius!

“No!” I shouted.

I had regained enough strength to transmogrify again. I turned into a warden, but the process took longer than normal, owing to my ongoing recovery. I clicked my sculk sensor and then teleported into the corner to save Cornelius.

The extra moment it took for me to transmogrify proved to be fatal. The TNT exploded just as I was reaching for Cornelius. His redstone body was vaporized in an instant. I was blown backwards against the wall.

I clicked my sculk sensor again. Claire and the female Twin were already engaged in battle just outside the room.

I stood up and transmogrified back into my villager self. Rage pulsed through my body as I pulled my sanguinite sword with my right hand and my amberite pickaxe with my left. I stalked toward the female twin, intent on her utter destruction.

“She’s mine,” said Claire.

“But she killed Cornelius!”

“I’ll let you have Ciaran.”

I smiled. “Deal.”

The female Twin screamed and rushed Claire, slashing her sword at her relentlessly. Claire blocked the first strikes with her netherite sword, but finally the Twin’s sanguinite sword bit into Claire’s left arm. Claire screamed.

“Stupid girl,” said the Twin. “Fake Chosen One.”

“What?” said Claire, breathing hard.

“That’s why Ciaran never asked you to join him. You don’t have any worthwhile powers.”

Claire snarled. She charged the female Twin, her anger speeding up her reflexes, making her forget her pain. She bobbed her head in one direction, and the Twin fell for the trick. As the Twin moved her sword to one side, Claire struck from the other, inflicting substantial damage on the Twin’s midsection.

“Yeah!” I shouted.

The Twin grabbed her side and grunted. “You’ll pay for that.”

Claire laughed and charged at the Twin again, but this time, the Twin quickly dropped her sword and pulled out a crossbow. She fired point blank … with a sanguinite-tipped arrow.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks. She reached for her stomach and slumped to the ground. She implored me with her eyes and then passed out.

I quickly dropped my amberite pickaxe, grabbed a splash potion of healing, and threw it on Claire. Then, I grabbed the pickaxe before the Twin could attack. I threw it at her like a dagger, the sharp pick pitching end-over-end until one of its points embedded in the Twin’s chest.

A surprised look crossed her face. “No, this can’t be. We are stronger than you.”

I stalked toward her, my sanguinite sword gripped tightly. “You forgot the most important thing.”

She blinked and then fell to her knees, her hands still holding the pickaxe. Her life was fading away. “What’s that?”

“We’re the Chosen Ones.” I slashed at her, and she disappeared in a puff of smoke. My pickaxe hovered in midair for a brief moment before it clattered to the ground.
