Chapter 6 - Kieran

I watch Serena drive away until her car is out of sight, and I let out an audible breath I didn’t even realize I was holding. I can’t believe I’ve just turned Serena down. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in a long time. But I know it was the right thing to do. She will be leaving Misty Vale soon enough and I will be staying here. There’s no way to make that work. I feel like my insides have been ripped out knowing Serena will soon disappear from my life once again. I jump onto my Harley, wanting to get home as quick as I can.

The house is dark and quiet as I unlock the door. Every night, I come home and no one is waiting for me. I’ve never felt as lonely as I do now. I’d do anything to have Serena in my arms, here with me. I kick off my boots before heading into the spare bedroom and open the closet. Pulling out my Gibson guitar, I check the strings before I play a few chords, tuning as I play. It brings back so many fond memories with Serena.

I close my eyes and as I strum the guitar, I think back to being onstage with Serena. When we played together, we were invincible. I think we just brought out the best in each other. The audience could feel our love for one another through our music. We would curl up in bed and write songs for days. It was so natural. So easy. When she left, I put the guitar away. I knew I could never play with anyone else; it just wouldn’t be the same. When I open my eyes, I spot a white shoebox on the top shelf.

Curious, I get up and reach for the box. I open the lid and plop myself back down on the edge of the bed. I forgot I had this box full of pictures of us playing together and posing while we were dating. The one right on top is of Serena singing to me as I sing back to her. We both have a look of beaming joy on our faces. Looking at this photo makes my heart ache. I go through each of the pictures in turn. The more I look at them, the more I want to be with Serena. I want to tell her we can figure out a way for us to be together. I lay back against my pillow, clutching the pictures as sleep eventually overtakes me.

I wake in the morning with a stiff neck. I’ve slept all night in the same position and now my body is letting me know as it creaks when I get up to stretch. I change into a t-shirt and shorts and head out for my morning run. As I pick up the pace, thoughts of Serena swirl around my head. I can’t let the opportunity of us getting back together pass me by.
