I HESITATED, BUT GWEN was not going to listen to me today.

“If you really want to team up, just make a squad already,” said Charles.

Charles’ voice carried through the high-pitched bustle of the mall, making the hairs on my hand stand on end. So far all I’d seen was a rather shy, nice, handsome man, but that voice was new. It was strange. It was low and menacing.

“What did you just say to me?” Gwen did not take lightly to provocation.

Her eyebrows were knotted in the angry expression. She did look a lot more beautiful when she was incensed, and given how pretty she already was, that was saying something. The sudden snake-like recoil gave Charles pause.

“I meant if we played as a three-man squad,” he chose to explain, taking a breath to calm himself. He was prudent, it would seem. No sane human took on Gwen when she was as triggered as she was today. “We’d have friendly fire off, and we could do a lot better.”

I was suddenly interested. Squad mode was something I’d wanted to try out ever since I’d saved Anna/Charles’ life. Gwen always liked to run solo, as it gave her the most satisfaction and the most rankings points. But perhaps, with provocation from someone she’d taken a dislike to, Gwen could be persuaded to try out squad mode. I learned almost immediately that she was barely interested.

“I would rather stop playing Fortnite altogether than team up with the likes of you!” Gwen snapped.

Hard luck there. I had to give Charles credit for trying.

“I’m coming. Like it or not.”

This was another surprise. I couldn’t help but smile.

“Wendy, would that be okay?” he asked gently.

After dissing Gwen in that fashion, he had actually asked me for permission, and this made the blood rush straight into my cheeks.

“Sure...” I replied, suddenly breathless.

It would seem that the day still had more to offer. Charles hefted the laptop bag he’d kept on the ground while talking to us and followed us out of the mall. I’d expected this to be a nice brunch with just the three of us girls, Gwen, Anna, and I, but oh, things had developed quite nicely.

“Wendy?” I felt a scorching gaze boring into my skull, and I turned to find Gwen blowing smoke out of her nostrils, ready to explode.

She must really not like Charles.

“Can’t help it now, can I?” the hated man in question smiled sheepishly, saying some really provocative words in the nicest tone I’d ever heard anyone say them in.

Gwen sniffed, turned a quick about-face, and stormed out of the mall. It wasn’t a direct yes, but at least it wasn’t a straight no. Somehow, Charles had won that exchange. Granted, it wasn’t perfect, but he had charisma.

We followed Gwen out into the parking lot. Where she was already donning her helmet with her little moped’s engine running. Charles looked at me, a little confused.

“Shouldn’t we be going together?”

I shrugged. It needed no more explanation.

“Well then. Let’s walk?”

I was suddenly aware of the situation.
