How long has the center been in business?

What are the center’s accreditations?

Are you licensed?

How flexible are you with pickup and drop-off times?

Do you supply diapers or is that up to the parents?

Can parents visit?

How are the children grouped together? By age?

Once you make your decision, be sure to allocate time for your child to adjust to the new surroundings. Plan on hanging around for a bit at first to ensure your child feels secure and confident with his new environment. It might take a few days of you staying the entire time, but use that to your advantage to observe how the facility is run. Your best bet is always to lean on recommendations of friends or coworkers who might already use a day-care facility, to feel more confident about your choice

My friend Julie found it was easier to put her son in day care early on, by twelve months old. “Certainly older children entering day care reap the benefit of socialization, but at that age they really haven’t developed separation anxiety yet,” she explained. “And it helped us get used to leaving our baby with someone else, which was important. It was a home day-care situation and we became great friends, like family.”

“My wife was able to take the first year off work, but eventually she too had to go back to work, so we sent our daughter to a local day care,” Frank told me. “We really liked the lady that ran it, but she had four to six other kids to tend to as well. Her teenage daughter helped out, but not all the time. Needless to say, at some point, Bella was on a swing unattended, fell, and almost bit her tongue off. She had to get stitches all the way through. It certainly wasn’t the caregiver’s fault and could have happened to anyone, but I couldn’t help thinking that if she had less kids to take care of, she might have been watching and caught the fall.”

Keeping the best interests of your child at the forefront of your decision will make both you and your child feel secure about the choice you make. Listen to your gut when it comes down to the final decision. It’s tough, I know, but this is just a sliver of the difficult decisions you will be faced with as a parent. Whether it’s a relative or a paid employee, finding that village is important and necessary. I am thankful for the many wonderful teachers our children had the advantage of experiencing in their formative years. Thanks to social media, I am able to still maintain a connection to those who have been a part of our early child-rearing days.
