The characteristics of Arrowheads

45. The arrowhead should be made of purified iron and should be sharp and pointed. They should be coated with the hardening plaster according to their feathers.

Arrowhead Types

46. The arrow heads can be of awl type, razor blade type, like that of a cow’s tail, crescent moon shaped, needle pointed, spear headed, teeth of calf shaped.

47. The arrowhead may be of petal of flower type, the beak of crow and many other types. The shape of arrowheads differ from country to country.

Functions of various Arrow- heads

48. The various types of arrow heads have various types of functions. For instance, the aaraamukha or an arrow head like an awl can cut through the skin, arrowhead like razor blade (kshurapra) is used to combat the arrows of the enemy or to cut up the hand of the enemy. Gopuccha (an arrow like cow’s tail) is good for hitting a target in general. The arrow shaped like crescent moon is used to sever enemy’s head, neck and bow. The needle pointed arrows were used to pierce the armour of an enemy.

49. The spear headed arrow and two pronged arrows were used to pierce the chest of enemy, while the arrowhead of crow’s beak type and cow’s tail types are used to hit (combat) the metallic weapons.

50. In addition to the above arrow heads, there is a special gopuccha type (shaped like cow’s tail) arrow head which is made pure bell metal and has got a metalic nail of three angula length fixed at its tip.

This gopuccha arrow head was used for practices in aiming targets and archery.
