Jesus wants us to really understand how important children are. In fact, he takes it a step further by saying the way you treat a child is the way you treat him. Those are powerful words. Especially when you consider the ever-increasing rates of child abuse, child neglect, and children’s health and nutrition issues both in the United States and around the world. In a way, Jesus is putting a huge responsibility on all of us to take better care of the hurting children on the planet. Jesus is the ultimate defender of the defenseless.

To this end, Jesus delivers an extremely severe warning for anyone who causes a child “to fall into sin” by saying that a child abuser would be better off drowned in the ocean. One assumption is that Jesus is talking about someone who has sexually abused a child, and there are many who think that act should result in the death penalty. But Jesus could also be referring to those who physically or verbally abuse children. Any kind of abuse might cause a child to question life, to stop trusting God, and to make poor choices. It’s no wonder Jesus condemned the abuser.

Fortunately, God is able to restore our broken spirits and can heal the wounds of a messed-up childhood, if we come to him with our pain and let him. But as for the ones inflicting the pain, Jesus put it plainly—they would be better off at the bottom of the ocean.
