I stopped at the bathroom that wasn’t as small as I feared and stood guard while the Amish filed in. CJ clasped my hand, but I heard something and pulled free.

“I’ll be right back,” I said.

She started to follow me when Laurel grabbed CJ’s wrist. “Let the sheriff do her business and you stay with us, dear.”

Laurel’s voice was smooth as silk and as our eyes briefly met, I felt great respect for her.

Adrenaline shot through my limbs, making running easy. Candles flickered in the kitchen and the smell of coffee was strong. I followed the air flow until I reached the part of the house that was ripped off. Toby’s truck was upside down and its bed poked into the laundry room.

Through the opening I saw the tree in the yard had indeed fallen—right on top of my car. The shock of seeing it flattened wasn’t nearly as bad when I looked around.

Everywhere on the horizon, the purple-colored sky was laced with lightning, but here the dusty yellow air held still, like it had paused for a moment. The palms that weren’t snapped were bent over and the yard was littered with branches. A buggy rested on its side in the middle of the road, but no horse or person was in sight.

Puddles littered the grass and the water soaking into the soil gave off a familiar, earthy smell that calmed my nerves despite the sight of the funnel cloud swirling out of the black clouds. I could see flashes and debris inside the rotating monster. It sounded like an approaching train—it looked like death.

Baahhh. Baahh. The bleating sounds increased in intensity.

“Damn it!” The roar of the storm muffled my gasp as I lifted my leg to climb over the pile of bricks. Cold rain stung my face and the wind forced the breath back into my throat.

Something caught my waist and I was dragged back inside through the gaping hole in the side of the house.

“I don’t think so,” Toby shouted against my cheek.

His arms wrapped around me, settling my back snuggly against his chest. He held tightly as I struggled to break free.

“Let go!”

“It’s a damn goat, Serenity! I owe it to Daniel and your kid to keep you from getting yourself killed over a goat!”

He was stronger than me and I realized how stupid it was to sprint toward the tornado to save someone else’s pet.

A gust picked up a wheelbarrow next to the barn. It slammed into the pen, crushing a section of fence. Mama goat lost her mind, jumped over the remnants of the fence and ran through the yard, away from the twister.

Baahh…

The baby was left behind. It bumped into the debris, unable to climb over and could not find the opening.

Toby saw it too. I felt him go limp behind me. Shoving me aside, he said, “I’ll get it! You stay here!”
