Freddie’s Left The Castle
Temperance
Why did he have to be leaving the next day? Is any exchange between us required relentless analysis and revisiting, it was that last one. I don't know what came over me. For a moment it was like I was being controlled by someone else, a woman who could fall in love with Frederick Archibald of WindsorArchibald, a Prince of England.
Before he left, Freddie left me another letter. It was written on his official stationery just like the last one. This letter was even briefer. He had been called away suddenly to Germany because his second cousin had just given birth. Afterward, he and Jamie had other business in Zürich. That meant I wouldn't be seeing Freddie for a few days. On the bright side, I could return to rehearsal unencumbered. I knew he wouldn't agree with me going especially after what happened last time. This time, I would talk to Maxim and put a plan in place. I would not have to worry about the paparazzi or flipping anyone off this time.
I kept Freddie's letter in my ballet bag and tucked it just beneath my pink warm-up sweatshirt.
I didn't want to share it with anyone. When I arrived at practice, Brittany wouldn't stop badgering me about the palace. She had seen the last slew of pictures and she wanted to know all the details. What did they ask you? Was it scary? She ignored the subject of my healing feet and focused on my encounter with the press.
I tried to fight off her questions but none of it was working. No matter what artful tactics I used to dodge her inquiries, Brittany kept asking me questions and pestering me about Freddie. She wanted to know what it was like to date a prince.
She wanted to know what it was like to be in love with someone who was the most desired bachelor in all the land. I had never told her I was in love with him. Despite the words that slipped out of my mouth, I wasn't even sure what I felt. All I knew was that Freddie was complicated. This whole situation was too complicated to make for idle gossip.
At least today, Brittany was being relatively nice. She had adjusted to the fact that I would be dancing Cinderella despite my injury. Of course, she made a few snide comments about how my form had gotten worse and she blamed it on the luxury scones at Blackmoor.
I ignored her and chalked it up to typical jealousy between ballerinas. After rehearsal, Maxim barely said two words to me. He helped me get to the car and then he gave me a warm hug goodbye. For some reason, I felt embarrassed at Milton watching us hug from the front seat. There was nothing to be embarrassed about. Both him and Freddie understood that Maxim and I were quite close. I suppose that recently Freddie had begun to get suspicious of Maxim's motives. I presume that he
