A couple of hours later, Phillips pulled the Mini Cooper onto the drive next to Adam’s red coupe. Switching off the engine, she took a moment to gather her thoughts as she stared out at the clear evening sky. Her head was pounding, and she was struggling to shake the grubbiness she felt having to kowtow to Fox and her cronies within the Manchester elite. Not for the first time, she wondered if she’d made the right decision going back after almost a year out of the job. Was it worth the hassle? If Fox was as crooked as she suspected, would she forever be fighting a losing battle?

With no answers forthcoming, she got out of the car and headed inside.

Stepping into the hallway, she was immediately struck by the delicious aromas filtering through from the kitchen. It seemed Adam was cooking up another storm.

She spotted him next to the stove, dancing with his back to the room as he cooked, James Brown’s ‘Get Up Offa That Thing’ playing on the smart speaker.

He hadn’t heard her come in, so she crept up behind him. ‘Hey, babe,’ she whispered in his right ear.

Jumping with fright, he span round to face her. ‘Jesus! You scared the shit out of me.’

‘Sorry, couldn’t resist.’ She laughed, drawing him into a long hug and savouring his unique scent.

‘How was your day?’ he asked, resting his chin on her head.

Phillips gripped him tighter. ‘Don’t ask.’

‘That bad?’

She released her grip and looked up at him. ‘To be honest, I haven’t got the energy to talk about it. I just want to switch off and forget about Major Crimes for one night.’

Adam kissed her on the forehead. ‘Sounds like a great idea. Why don’t you grab a shower, and by the time you get back down, this’ll be ready.’

‘What are we having?’

‘Spicy seafood noodles.’

‘Sounds delicious,’ she said before kissing him on the cheek and heading off upstairs.

Twenty minutes later, having washed the day away, she slipped on an old, faded T-shirt and jogging bottoms and made her way back down to the kitchen.

Adam smiled as he handed her a glass of her favourite Pinot Grigio.

‘God, I need this,’ she said, taking a mouthful. ‘How long will dinner be?’

‘About five minutes.’

Slipping onto one of the breakfast stools next to the kitchen island, she watched as he busied himself pulling everything together. She’d never been much of a cook herself. Long days in the office usually finished with some form of microwave meal or a takeaway on the way home, so it was a real treat to have him cook on the rare evenings he wasn’t working at the hospital. She allowed herself a smile as the wine kicked in, and she finally started to relax.

A minute or so later her phone began vibrating on the countertop: Don Townsend was calling.

Adam glanced across. ‘Who is it?’

‘Nobody important,’ she replied, rejecting the call.

As Adam began plating up, the phone vibrated again.

‘Whoever it is, they really want to speak to you,’ said Adam.
