CHAPTER 29

He can see that Brad is driving with just the one hand. From the angle of his shoulder and upper arm, the injured hand is resting on his lap. That gives him slight cause for concern, not being able to see it, but then it is hardly a surprise. If it is as bad as Brad has suggested it is, then it isn’t going to be a threat.

The window on Brad’s car winds down slowly, after he stops.

‘I’m not late am I?’ he asks with a tired whine in his voice.

‘Nah, I’d gone round the back and then realized of course that we won’t be stopping.’ He knows that the words are weak and if Brad gives them any thought, he will start to think something is wrong. Thankfully, Brad is in too much pain to see through his reasoning. Brad adjusts himself in the car. The movement obviously hurts him. His eyes turn down to look at the source of the pain. That is the opportunity for things to change.

He sees Brad look down as he moves position in the car, and knows instinctively that there won’t be a better natural moment for him to jump into action.

By the time he raises his arm and brings it across his body, Brad has turned his head back in his direction. Brad is too slow to react though. As the arm has been raised, the gloved hand has automatically come into view. It is what the hand holds, that changes the expression on Brad’s face.

The arm and hand movement finish its arc swiftly, ending with the hand aiming its contents through the open window at Brad. Brad starts to open his mouth to say something, but the words never make it out of his mouth. The trigger has been pulled and the Taser gun sends its coil across the short gap, embedding the two prongs in Brad’s shoulder. The effect is instantaneous, as the charge piles into Brad’s body. He keeps his finger on the trigger, keeping the flow going for a few seconds.

He sees Brad is disabled, so stops. He pulls his car forward and jumps out of the door, as soon as he is clear of Brad’s vehicle. He dons the second glove as he makes it to Brad’s door, which he yanks open. He reaches inside for Brad’s weapon, but it isn’t there. He isn’t packing his gun in a holster, but then he isn’t on duty. He quickly runs round to the other side and checks the glove box and under the seats. He finds Brad’s Glock 15 under his driving seat. Brad is still incapacitated. Now he is hoping that Julie isn’t going to be late, in fact he now hopes she will be early. He doesn’t want to have to use the Taser again. He keeps the second Taser in his hand, just in case it is needed. He hasn’t removed the wires from Brad yet.

‘Come on come on’ he whispers to himself ‘come on Julie, you can get here now.
