Celia Sable stood across the table from Captain Onyx in the Death Adder’s main cabin giving her report. Only the light in his eyes revealed that he was even alive, much less paying attention. Before them, a large star map was spread out and held down by obsidian disks inlaid with red serpents.

“…when the foremast went by the boards it damaged the bow sprit further. We could not continue the pursuit and the Motherlode entered the drain. I brought the Death Adder back to the harbor for repairs.”

When she had finished, she folded her arms across her middle and shifted her stance so that her hips slid out from under her shoulders.

“And yet you had the time to change clothes, I see,” Onyx said.

Celia lowered her head a bit, but her eyes stayed on Onyx as she gave a slight shrug of concession. She was tired of his condescending prattle, but she didn’t betray the thought on her face. He was a little piece of stone in the mud before her, but she would play his game – for now. It was true, she now wore a soft leather jacket the color of pooled blood over a ruffled shirt of fine white silk. Black leather pants hugged her lithe figure down to ankle boots that matched her coat. A flat tricorn hat of pitch velvet trimmed with gold sat slightly sideways on her head, atop a kerchief of crimson. Loose strands of her dark hair escaped here and there contrasting against her skin. Despite her flat features, most males found her attractive, but Onyx was a Flint and never paid attention to her in that way.

“In my cabin on the return trip,” she said with a sniff.

“You’re positive the power gems from the core of the Motherlode were removed?”

“Positive my Captain,” she answered. “The men produced them when I inquired. You were right about the boy; he is a channeler, a Corsair.”

“Corsair –the Cosmic Magi,” Onyx said, “One of the rarer types, I believe?”

“Rare indeed, and the old man is a Transmuter, equally as rare. He turned into a bird, I saw it happen myself. The men at the cart said he threw hot wind at them as well, which means he’s also an Elementalist.” Her face twisted in warning and then jealous disgust.

“A Morphic Magian, Air and Fire Elementalist as well,” Onyx said pondering. “A Magian that can channel more than one discipline is the rarest amongst the rare. The better question is: Why would such a unique and powerful Magian come here, allow himself and his companions to be captured, and then steal away with the human boy and his talisman?”

“Certainly it was the talisman they were after,” Celia said feigning disinterest. “He probably seeks the Earth’s location as well. Nothing else makes any sense. The rebel Celestrians are always looking for planets to hide on from their militant brethren. There are those amongst them with the gift of foresight too, perhaps–” She didn’t finish, but instead gave the plausible shrug humans so often used.
