Chapter 20

I woke, startled to see sunlight on my bedroom floor, its fingers reaching all the way to my bed. Years have passed since my last memory of sleeping so soundly. The now familiar pecking at the window began. The world changing activities of the last couple of days came rushing back. I threw my bed covers off, slid out of bed, and ran to open it. By the time I got it closed again Rayel stood by my side.

“Good morning, Princess. Are you ready?”

“Not really, but as much as I’ll ever be.”

“Grab some clothes and pack a small bag.”

I pulled a suitcase out of the closet and started throwing in stuff, not even questioning his orders. I had no idea how long I’d be at the command center, so I probably packed way too much. I hesitated before grabbing my make-up, but decided Rayel deserved my best efforts and tossed it on top. With a little difficulty I pushed everything down and zipped. “I’m ready. I need to figure out what to tell Mom and Dad. Any ideas?”

Humor oozed from his voice as he quipped, “You could tell them you’re running off with me to see the universe.” Then in the next second he was serious. “Tell them you and Kat are invited to attend a science camp for a week.”

“So, Kat’s going too?” That made me happy.

“I have Brock working on it right now.”

He didn’t say how Brock was working on it, or how he had communicated with him, but I had no doubt he had.

I found Mom and told her. She thought the camp sounded like a great idea and was really proud of me for getting invited. She never questioned the suddenness of the event. I felt a slight ting of guilt for the lie. But the feeling was quickly gone, and I hurried back upstairs to Rayel.

After letting him out the window I went downstairs again and met him at the car, pulling my rolling suitcase behind me. He didn’t flash his usual smile. That scared me, and all of a sudden, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the sky as we drove away.

“Are you worried?” I had to ask. I really hopped he wasn’t.

He hesitated a little too long before answering, and I got the feeling he wanted to back out. “A little.” He looked straight into my eyes. “Not so much for me, but,” His jaw pulsed. “Well, for you. I can take care of myself, but with more than one of them, I worry about taking care of you, too.”

“Glad I asked. Now I feel better.” I said sarcastically. I turned to look out the window. “All those skills I learned; can’t they help me?”

“Absolutely, but they are pretty specific. I don’t know if you’ve learned enough to protect yourself without just making them mad. Kinda like a little mosquito.”

A black Lincoln passed us, going way too fast for a neighborhood street. I couldn’t see the occupants through the tinted windows. “He needs to slow down before someone gets killed.
