The Bayside Hotel lobby was quiet on this Wednesday night as midnight approached, though a few hardened partiers still lingered at the poolside bar. Aaron was working late, not even sure why. He’d left for work at three, having not seen Paolo since his return from the beach with Parker, and good thing since he just wasn’t sure how he would confront his partner about his newfound friendship. Conflict ruled his heart.

At the concierge desk, Aaron placed his “Closed” sign up, then headed over to the bar. Maxie, one of his favorite employees, was still serving and she took one look at the tired, defeated man before her and offered up a wan smile. “What’ll it be.”

“Tequila, Patron. Keep ‘em coming.”

“You got a room for the night?” she asked.

“If I want to, yeah.”

“Want company?”

Aaron grimaced and Maxie laughed; it was an old joke between them. She knew he was unavailable for many reasons. So she just poured him his shot, waited for him to knock it back fast before refilling it.

“Oh, I needed that,” he said. “Been on my feet since three.”

“Poor baby,” Maxie said, and then went off to help a paying customer.

Aaron looked down at the second shot, pondered the allure of the clear liquor, and then thought to hell with it, that’s why people make it, to drink it. So he downed it, a harsh burning sliding down his throat, like come backed with hot sauce. He laughed inwardly. Ha, how would he know? It had been too long since he and Paolo had had really good sex, even longer since Aaron had sucked him and drank down his Spanish lover’s juice. Was tequila a poor standin?

Maxie made her way back, refilling his shot glass.

“Busy day,” she said, “but at least it was pressure free, what with Mr. Converse out of town.”

“Oh, I didn’t know. Guess that’s why he left me alone. Staying at his place in Carmel?”

“Not what I heard,” Maxie said with a knowing look. “From what I know, he’s in New York trying to work some angle for his plan to take your home. Not sure what New York has to do with Wonderland, but these days life ain’t the same here, you know? He won’t be back till next Monday. All I know is, it makes for a happy work atmosphere here at the Bayside, all of us out from under that bald tyrant’s thumb.”

“You know, he probably has video and audio devices planted everywhere,” Aaron said.

Maxie spoke into the bottle of tequila in her hands. “Bald tyrant, are you listening? I’m giving Aaron Walters free booze. Bye-bye profits.”

She laughed as she poured Aaron his fourth shot. He didn’t hesitate to knock it back with the ease of man intent on a night of self-destruction.

It was another half hour and a couple more shots later before Aaron finally gave up and said he was going to crash in the employee-reserved room, and Maxie made doubly sure of that by taking hold of his car keys.
