It was just before dusk on the eleventh of May when Colonel Fitzwilliam returned to Pemberley. It had been a long but successful two days in Manchester. He was greeted by Moreton as he entered and told he would find his cousins in the music room. Fitzwilliam entered the room quietly; he did not want to interrupt his young cousin’s rendition of a Mozart sonata. As the last note faded, he applauded loudly. “Well done, little one; an excellent performance.”

Georgiana jumped up from the stool and walked quickly to her cousin. “You have returned!” she cried.

“I have, indeed,” he replied, turning to look at Darcy, “and I come bearing the spoils of war.” He held out a canvas bag.

“You were successful?” Darcy asked as he took hold of the bag. He opened it and took out a silver swan. “Thank you. I am in your debt.”

Georgiana, realising that her brother and cousin had much to talk about, made her excuses. “It is wonderful to have you here again, cousin,” she said, “and I hope you will still be here when I awake in the morning.” On receiving her cousin’s promise, Georgiana then looked at her brother. “William, I am a little tired. I hope you do not mind if I take my leave of you now and wish you both good night.”

Darcy kissed his sister’s cheek and, once she had departed, suggested to Fitzwilliam that they retire to his study. “Are you hungry?” Darcy asked as they walked out of the music room.

“A little,” he replied. “I have to say a cold repast would not go amiss. It has been a long journey. I wished to arrive at a reasonable hour so did not stop for any refreshment.”
