Fifteen

A couple of weeks later, striding along the trail that led around the lake, Jessica relished the changing leaves around her, the crunch of them beneath her feet, as Marcus sighed at his cell phone.

“The Diamond Gate,” he grumbled. “That’s what the press is calling this.”

“I mean, it’s got a ring to it,” she said with a laugh.

He looped his arm around her neck, dragging her close. “Not funny.”

“It’s a little funny,” she countered. The families were still in an uproar, but she had noticed that the Winters family seemed to band together a little tighter.

Marcus pressed a kiss to her temple and said, “I’m just happy not to be as involved in the mess as I once was.”

“That’s definitely the best part of all this,” she said, twining her fingers with his resting off her shoulder.

There were a lot of things going on behind the scenes with the necklace being certified. Soon there would be more talk about the stolen diamonds, but Marcus had his family surrounding him now. They were all deciding Diamond Gate matters together, and she could see the weight that had been lifted off his shoulders.

His great-grandmother’s letter was buried at her grave, never to be discovered, and Marcus and his father had returned to their slightly strained but amiable relationship that seemed to be getting better now that they were also working together. And she was getting to know Joseph and Camille, and they were getting to know her. She felt welcomed into his family, regardless that she didn’t come from wealth and power, and yet was still close to Maggie too.

Life had somehow settled into a beautiful rhythm that she hoped never broke.

But the feud itself had snapped back firmly into place. “Do you think there will ever be peace again?” she asked as her boots crunched the dead leaves.

Marcus sighed and kissed her temple again. “I have no idea. All I know is it’s likely to get way worse before things can get better.” He tugged her closer, pressing her against all the hard lines of his body. “Luckily, for me, I’ve got you to help me through his feud.”

“Oh, well, that might be hard,” she said, razzing him. “Who says you’ve got me?”

He lifted an eyebrow at her. “I do.”

“There’s that ego again.” She grinned, even though she loved his confidence. The strength of him. The solidness of his character.

“It’s not ego,” he said. “It’s truth. I know for certain that you’d choose me.”

“Oh, really, and why is that?” she asked playfully.

He stopped, turned her into him and hugged her tight enough it made breathing difficult.

When he finally leaned away, he kissed that sweet spot on her neck that he could always find, and he smiled against her skin when she shivered. “I know it, because the only place we’re meant to be is together.”

When he leaned away, she had tears in her eyes. “No feud could ever stop that,” she said.

“No, it couldn’t,” he agreed.

She leaned in to give him a kiss and he obliged her, but he backed away before it could heat up.
