CHAPTER 15

Howard’s car was in the driveway when Scott came back to pick him up. Ryan was waiting outside looking nervous.

“Why are you out here?” Scott asked.

Ryan got in. “I didn’t want to talk to Howie anymore.”

“Why? Did he say something about last night?”

“What would he say? He didn’t know you were here.”

“I don’t know. Did you get rid of the two glasses?”

“Shit. I didn’t think about that. They’re still in the kitchen sink. I don’t think he’ll smell the bourbon though. He looked pretty sleepy.”

Scott grinned and put his foot on the clutch. “Sounds like everyone got some last night.” As he looked back over his shoulder, he made the announcement. “My mom knows about us,” he said as he pulled out of the drive.

“What! Why did you tell her?”

“I didn’t tell her. I didn’t come home last night, remember?”

Ryan was panicked. “She figured it out from that?”

“Dude, she knows I’m gay.”

“Fuck! You didn’t tell me that!”

“Hell, you’ve only known for a week.” Scott started to notice that he was doing a fair amount of arguing with Ryan when they interacted. It’s not supposed to be like this, he thought.

“Is she pissed?” Ryan asked.

“No. More worried than anything. But she worries about everything.”

“What did she say?”

“She’s surprised you’re gay.”

Ryan mulled over the thought that Scott’s mother now knew about the two of them. He didn’t want everyone thinking he might be gay, much less anyone knowing what was going on between he and Scott. How awful that sounded to him most of the time. To identify himself the way Scott so easily did unnerved him. “Well, I’m worried now.”

“Not you, too.” Maybe that’s his problem, Scott thought, he worries a lot. He panics at the drop of a hat. Scott, on the other hand, just let a lot of things slide.

“What if she tells everyone?”

“Duh. My mom? Not. Besides, I told her not to say anything to my dad. Or Howie.”

“Please, not Howie,” Ryan said somewhat to himself.

Scott thought for a moment about how Ryan continued to put up this grand façade to pretend he was straight. “Look. Things aren’t gonna be any different. I tried. It didn’t work. You are what you are.”

“I doubt it.”

Scott countered. “Bullshit. I thought if I hung out with the guys more often I’d get over it. It didn’t happen. So, there’s nothing to get over. And Aunt Cin told me to just enjoy the fact that I’m different.”

He was sure Scott was right. In fact, he had tried the same thing. Hanging out with Dolf and the other guys back home only made him long to get in their pants. And how could he explain Crawford? He couldn’t, no matter how much he tried. He felt so fucking different, like a misfit. Sure, his show was good. People thought he was one of the guys. To his friends back home he acted the part perfectly. Some of the time he even believed it himself. Despite the disturbing thoughts that swirled in his mind, he realized Scott was trying to calm him down.
