“YOU LOOK beautiful.”

“Thanks. You clean up pretty good yourself.”

Kyle and Vanessa were sitting in front of the fireplace in his apartment, watching the flames dance and listening to Christmas songs playing in the background. Vanessa was still dressed in the tiny black number she’d worn to the restaurant where they’d had dinner. All in all, Kyle thought, not a bad way to spend a holiday.

“So, you’re going to see your family in Fort Collins tomorrow?” Vanessa asked.

“Day after. I have to work tomorrow afternoon. How about you?”

“Our big family get-together is tomorrow afternoon. I can’t wait to give Daniel his present. He got a much bigger one than all the other cousins this year.” Vanessa winked at Kyle and took a sip of wine.

“You like me that much, huh?”

“Enough that Daniel got the expensive wrapping paper, that’s for sure.”

Kyle chuckled and pulled her closer. “I’m glad we got to spend some time together. This past week has been a little rough.”

Vanessa nibbled lightly at his ear. “You’ve been worrying about your diabetic patient?”

“I have. He seems fine. Things are going okay with the people he’s staying with, and he’ll still get to spend Christmas with his grandfather—even if it is in the hospital.” Kyle shook his head. “To be honest, lately I’ve been worried about Benjy.”

“That waiter? The one who’s interning at the hospital?”

“Uh-huh. He made some comment about how I just don’t get what it’s like to spend Christmas alone. I’m pretty sure he’s about to spend the holidays by himself, even though he’d never admit it. There’s just so much more to that kid than he lets on.”

Vanessa moved her nibbles to the back of Kyle’s ear, and shivers ran through his body. “He’s not really a kid, Kyle. He’s what? In his early twenties? He can take care of himself.”

“Yeah, right. That’s why I had to practically pick him up off a restaurant floor. Not to mention that he seems pissed at me about that, too. He made some comment about how I’m always trying to rescue people and then I don’t care about what happens to them afterward. Crazy. I tried to get in touch with him after he got sick. He never called me back!”

Vanessa suddenly abandoned Kyle’s ear and pulled her body around so that she was straddling his legs. “Kyle. Do you have feelings for Benjy or something?”

Kyle hoped his face held more shock than he felt. “Where did that come from? I haven’t been seeing anyone besides you, Vanessa.”

“I didn’t ask you if you’ve been seeing Benjy. I asked you if you had feelings for him.”

“What are you talking about? Vanessa, I swear, I’m just worried about him. He’s a good guy. He’s worked hard to put himself through school, and he’s working so hard to do the right thing for our diabetes patient. He’s impressed me. I’m worried about him. That’s absolutely all it is.” He carefully pushed back the memory of the night he’d jerked off thinking about Benjy sharing a shower with him.
