I. Introduction
The structure of developing enamel can be considered on many levels of order, from the development of the final morphology of individual hydroxyapatite crystals to their incorporation and final arrangement into superassemblies of prismatic, interprismatic, and aprismatic enamel. Across species there are many variations on these themes. For example, the development of rat incisor enamel results in apatite crystals that have a highly uniform and regular appearance (Figure 1), while in human enamel the constituent crystals appear to be subject to much less control during their final phases of growth and extremely irregular profiles can result. The functional significance of such variations in enamel structure are not yet clear. It is reasonable to assume that they are satisfying some ultimate requirement in the overall functioning of the tooth. In general terms, as Boyde and Jones1 have noted, the division of the mineral into a large number of relatively small, discrete crystals provides a material that is hard and durable, yet has some degree of flexibility. The enamel as a whole is presumably arranged to dissipate, in the most efficient way, the energy applied to it without fracture.
