The Good Doctor

After four months of marriage to Drake, Katherine returned to therapy. “I’m glad you’re here, Katherine,” said Dr. Petrice, the family’s personal psychiatrist. “It’s been quite a while.” The doctor put down her phone and focused all her attention on Katherine.

It had been years since Katherine’s last visit. Dr. Petrice had been concerned that Katherine might never come back. She’d been intermittently prescribing her medication at the suggestions of her maidservant Teresa—a licensed psychotherapist—who, fortunately, had long been personally monitoring Katherine’s wellbeing from inside Katherine’s own home and from her parents’ house before that. Teresa had been keeping Dr. Petrice abreast of Katherine’s condition over the years, and between the two professionals, Katherine’s mental health had been stabilized.

“Drake thought it a good idea,” said Katherine, comfortably propped on the office couch, familiar as it had been all those years earlier. “He’s my husband, and lately he’s been worried about me.” She went to sip from her water bottle. “I guess he’s right. I haven’t been myself in the past few weeks.”

Dr. Petrice smiled and said, “Well, I feel that congratulations are in order.” She had known of all this prior to Katherine’s visit. There was little of Katherine’s life that either of the professional women did not know. “So, Katherine, tell me,” the conversation turned clinical, “is the fear returning?”

“I guess you could say that. But it’s really about the sex.” Katherine chose her words carefully.

“Go on, please,” said the doctor.

“It’s the pain, Charlotte. I’ve never had any before, and it’s interfering with our lovemaking. Between Drake and me, that is. I’ve never had so much sex before…” She looked at her bashfully—“Or any, for that matter. But that was before all the pain started... the large amounts of sex, that is. And now, actually, we hardly even do it.”

“Have you gone for a gynecological exam?”

“I’ve seen my doctor every week since I got back from my honeymoon. I thought I was pregnant, but I wasn’t. I never told Dr. Ramana about the pain. Like I said, it only came right when Drake was going to penetrate me.” Katherine was embarrassed to use the word. “The pain immediately vanishes afterward, after our intimacy. I know it’s all got to be in my head.”

“I see.”

Katherine felt embarrassed. She felt as if the doctor was judging her. “The past several months, I—I should have told you. I should have come in earlier.” A pout nearly escaped her lips.

Dr. Petrice had known all along exactly what was happening in Katherine’s life but had to wait for Katherine to make the decision to come in and see her before she could help her. Katherine had no idea that Teresa, the devoted family servant, and even Hepps Bob, to a lesser extent, were keeping an eye on her. Her life had always been under the watchful eye of others, others who were concerned about her well-being.

The doctor allowed Katherine time to explain things about her and Drake, and then, of course, everything about Brett, who’d also been on the radar.
