Chirping filled the jungle air as the rabisu and I fell through the tree, the branches getting in our way and bouncing us off to the side. Its fangs slid closer to me and it was all I could do to keep my one fist jammed up in its neck, holding its head back.

As we fell, I jerked us to one side and put the rabisu below me.

A split second later, we hit the soft vegetation littering the ground. Okay, maybe soft wasn’t the right word. We came to a sudden stop and my body slammed into the rabisu’s. Its teeth still snapped at me though its arms were limp. I rolled off it as the chirping picked up again, closing in on us. I forced my body to shift into my house cat form and scuttled away.

Chirping right in front of me and I slowly lowered myself to the ground, flat to my belly. The rabisu swept its head this way and that. Scenting the air. It paused right next to me, slitted nostrils flaring wide.

Fuck.

I gritted my teeth and bolted forward, racing away as the chirps went into a series of calls that echoed through the trees. Roosting birds shot into the night air, silent but for the pulse of their wings. A single moment of insight told me that the birds here had learned not to chirp. Learned not to make a sound.

Which meant every bird sound was a rabisu.

A volley of cries went up all around me.

So much for them not chasing down small prey. Then again, I’d stolen food from them and killed a few of their own. Who knew what kind of mind they had to understand that cost they bore because of me?

I sure as hell wasn’t going to stop to ask.

Racing along the jungle floor, I dodged several sets of hands before the chirping eased. I didn’t know how long the jungle stretch was, but it was long enough that I knew I wouldn’t be able to cover it in one night as a house cat.

As a jungle cat, though, that was a different game altogether.

Keeping my speed up, I shifted from one cat to another as I ran. My strides lengthened and I more than doubled my speed as I used the simple pathways of the jungle. I found myself edging closer to the eastern dirt, sand, and rock wall of the valley as I ran. The sand sprinkled off like a spurt of fairy dust as my hip bumped it here and there. I hoped it wouldn’t give them another way to track me.

At least that would keep my right flank protected. I didn’t like how silently those rabisu fuckers moved when they wanted to, and I wouldn’t put it past them to set up some sort of trap ahead of me.

An hour ticked by while the chirping behind me and to the left didn’t slow, and it was a damn good thing I was in fighting shape. Even so, my lungs and muscles wouldn’t hold up forever.
